HIS 368 The Black Family

Course DescriptionThis course examines the transformation of African American families from the end of the Civil War into the 21st century. Students will explore social science debates on structure vs. culture along with the impact of federal and state policies on African American families. Students will assess the effects of the low-wage service sector economy, substandard housing, welfare reform, and gentrification while focusing on black perspectives that emphasize the dynamics of gender and the importance of grassroots political activism. Fulfills U.S geographic area and L13 Futher Disciplinary Study. Open to majors and non-majors. Prerequisite: one course from any of the following: U.S. History, New York State History, African American History, or Sociology.
