HIS 261 African-Amer Hist to 1863

In this course, students analyze the social, economic, political, and cultural impact of African migration by interpreting primary documents and synthesizing historical scholarship in written work and classroom discussion. Students will acquire knowledge of the rise of the mercantile Atlantic economy and industrial capitalism, the development of racial ideology, the impact of global religions on the expansion of slavery, the abolitionist movement, and the embedded contradictions between the profession of democratic and Christian ideals and the practice of chattel slavery. Students will demonstrate a geographic knowledge of the African diaspora and the ability to analyze primary documents from diverse points of view. Fulfills diversity requirement. Fall, Spring (L03)
