This course surveys European history from ancient Rome through the Hundred Years War. Themes and topics include: rise and fall of the Roman Empire and its historical legacies, the emergence and spread of Christianity, the institutional growth of monasticism, the Church and papacy, monasticism and its contributions to western culture, the rise of Islam and its contributions to western culture, the Byzantine and Islamic Empires, Carolingian Europe, feudalism, the birth of the universities and the liberal arts curriculum, and the origins of modern political systems and sovereign states. 3 credits (L03)
