HIS 217 Mod Britain 1815-present

In this course we will chart the rise and decline of Britain as a world power, its role in globalization, and the legacies it has left to the modern world. Topics include: the rise and expansion of the British Empire, the rise of industrial capitalism, slavery, the factory system, industrial society and class formation; ideologies of race/racism and colonial societies; constitutional development and the rise of party politics; modern social, political, and economic ideologies; Anglo-Irish relations; social movements; world wars and establishment of the welfare state; the Cold War and special relationship with the US; Britain and the European Union. Open to HIS/POS majors and Social Studies concentrators, or with permission of the instructor. 4 credits (L03)
