Policy Provisions

1. Lofting and Bunking of Beds

In some residence halls at Cumberland University, The Office of Residence Life has provided industry recommended furniture to allow students to loft or bunk their bed frames in their room. Since the safety of each resident is of prime importance to the Office of Residence Life, the following information has been made available to aid the student in construction of their loft.

2. Fire Safety

A minimum of 30 inches is required between the ceiling and the top of the mattress; this ensures that the smoke detector is protected and will reduce the possibility of students bumping their head.

The loft should not restrict the full opening of any room door nor should it obstruct fire safety equipment, window or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC).

3. Personal Safety

A safety rail on the top loft/bunk is highly recommended to prevent students from possibly falling out of the loft.

4. General

Once a resident has constructed their loft or bunks, the resident should contact their Residence Life Coordinator to confirm the loft is constructed properly and with the required equipment. This should occur before the resident sleeps in the loft.

The resident is responsible for correcting all deficiencies noted by the Residence Life Coordinator and will have 24 hours (unless otherwise noted by the Residence Life Coordinator) to bring the construction up to standards or deconstruct the loft or bunk. A second inspection is required after corrections are made.

All lofts or bunks must be taken down prior to the resident checking out of the room. Any loft/bunk that remains in the building after check-out will be de-lofted at a cost of $25.00, charged to the residents account.

The resident will also be charged for any damages to the room or its furnishings resulting from the loft construction or usage.

Cumberland University does not assume any responsibility for the construction or use of lofts in the residence halls. Using loft/bunk kits not provided by the University or using cinder blocks to raise a bed is prohibited.
