CJS 432 Theories of Justice

The term 'justice' is derived from the term 'just' which is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as behaving according to what is morally right and fair. But the Oxford Dictionary offers three different definitions of the term 'justice', and when we add qualifiers to the term 'justice' such as administrative, criminal, procedural, social and so on, it quickly becomes apparent that there are many theories of justice. This course will examine the assumptions and concepts of the major theories of justice in order to provide the student with a more sophisticated appreciation of the complexity of the term justice, a term that has been an integral part of their criminal justice curriculum.
