AHI 350 Art and Buddhism

A global examination of the intersections between art and Buddhism. The course provides a survey of Buddhist art and architecture present and past. Particular focus is given to the iterations of Buddhism in the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with respect to transnational contexts (considering figures such as composer John Cage and contemporary sculptor Sopheap Pich). The course will include onsite study of Buddhist art in major New York City museums: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Rubin Museum, and/or The Asia Society.
