HIS 219 Modern Britain 1815-Present

This course surveys modern British history from the 17th century to the present. Topics include an examination of the changing relationship between parliamentary institutions and the constitutional monarchy; successes and failures in the creation of a British identity; industrialization and the creation of an urban society; the birth of English socialism and the founding of the welfare state; the Irish question; the expansions and contractions of empire; and the changing role of the church and religion in British life.
