CJS 243 Homeland Security

This course is designed to provide an overview of the foundations of the modern era of Homeland Security in the United States. It begins with an explanation of the reasons why the United States settled on an all-hazards approach that conceives of homeland security as a wide ranging activity that involves all levels of government (federal, state, and local). The course identifies the agencies involved in homeland security, their stated missions, and the challenges they face. The issues examined in the course are connected by a single theme; the balance between security and the preservation of civil liberties.
