SEC 377 Methods Tchg Science Sec Sch

This course provides students with practical approaches to implementing the New York Learning Standards in English Language Arts and New York State standards for Science and Technology within an integrated curriculum. Lecture, laboratory, demonstration and inquiry methods and their appropriateness for various instructional purposes are discussed. The use of trade books and literature to promote reading and writing in the science curriculum, the use of instructional technologies, project based teaching to promote inquiry, research and presentation skill building, multicultural education, analysis of standardized and alternative assessments, strategies for inclusion students, science across the curriculum, interdisciplinary teaching between sciences (i.e., chemistry, biology, physics, earth sciences and general science) and between other content subjects are stressed. The secondary science curriculum is studied, and students develop lesson and instructional plans. Assignments, homework, review and assessment techniques are discussed. Students will complete a 25-hour field experience in conjunction with the course. Students must obtain fingerprint clearance prior to beginning field experiences. Prerequisite: SEC 365. One credit of literacy is embedded in this course. Fall.
