MUS 306 History of Musical Theater

History of Musical Theater explores the roots of Broadway from its antecedents of Tin Pan Alley, vaudeville and minstrel shows, and opretta; through the Golden Age book musicals of the 40s, 50s, and 60s; to the innovations of Sondheim and his contemporaries; to the modern landscape that includes On-and-Off Broadway productions, the emergence of regional theater, and the diversification of music styles. Students will examine composers and lyricists as well as producers, directors, choreographers, and performers in original and revival productions; identify historical and cultural influences; and assess the elements of select musical performances.
