CJS 331 Defending the Accused

The Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights to not be required to self-incriminate and to be represented by competent counsel (appointed or retained) in a criminal matter is fundamental to our system of criminal justice. This course explores constitutional bounds of the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination at the investigative stage of a criminal matter and the Sixth Amendment right to effective assistance of counsel in a criminal proceeding. The course is taught using a casebook and Socratic method. Fulfills diversity requirement.
