PBH 364 The Politics of AIDS

(Cross-listed with POS 364) This course will explore a range of issues surrounding the politics of the AIDS pandemic, including conflicts around prevention and drug policies; discrimination (race and gender) and human rights; and international (non)cooperation. Assigned readings will offer some theoretical background, case studies and historical perspectives, as well as introduce students to the types of research in the field of HIV/AIDS, broadly defined. Some of the questions to be considered in the course are: How do the politics of ethnicity, gender, and geography shape responses to HIV/AIDS?  What role do global hierarchies play in the concentration of the pandemic in certain geographic regions? What is the role of knowledge and power in the prevention debate? Fulfills diversity and writing-intensive requirements. Prerequisite: POS 171 or 173. Fall.
