CSD 431 Adult Cog, Com, Swalo Disorder

The purpose of this course is to expose undergraduate students who are in their Junior or Senior year to topics and issues related to adults with acquired cognitive, communicative, and swallowing disorders. These disorders can result from head and neck cancer, traumatic brain injury, stroke, progressive neurologic diseases or treatment-based issues such as side effects from medication, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. The students will learn about acquired communication issues such as apraxia, aphasia, dysarthria, language of confusion and cognitive-linguistic impairment. In addition, they will gain a basic understanding about the normal and disordered oral, pharyngeal and esophageal stages of swallowing. The course pre-requisites are CSD 204, CSD 350, and CSD 360.
