Medical Emergencies and First Aid

General Description:

Description/Scope: Information about medical emergencies and first aid relative to emergency services policies and procedures.

 

Purpose: Delineation of procedures.

 

Who Performs/Responsibility: University Employees as designated and/or as needed.

 

When to Perform: As needed

 

Requirements:

• Pre-Knowledge: Before perfo1ming this task, you must know:

1. Current University policy

2. Standards of good practice

 

Terms and Definitions:

• First Aid - Immediate help given to a victim of injury or sudden illness until appropriate medical help arrives. There are two categories of emergencies.

1. Life Threatening (Major)

2. Non-Life Threatening (Minor)

• Qualified Personnel: Those who are professionally ce1iified in AED and CPR techniques.

What to Do:

• Life Threatening (Major):

1. Call 9-1-1.

o Provide the following information to the dispatcher:

1. Name

2. Phone Number Calling From

3. Location of the incident

4. Any Information about the victim that can be provided

5. Follow Instructions/Answer Questions from Dispatch.

6. Do not hang up (let Dispatch hang up first)!

2. Call Campus Security: (615) 476-3061

3. Provide First Aid/Care as Needed:

1. Keep the victim still and comfortable. DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM.

2. Control serious bleeding by direct pressure on the wound.

3. Qualified Personnel (AED/CPR/First Aid Trained) can perform the following:

1. If the person is unresponsive/not breathing provide Basic Life Support (CPR/AED).

■ Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are in the following areas:

■ Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena Hallway (off the main lobby next to the trophy case)

■ Memorial Hall next to the back entrance (ramp),

■ Main Athletic Training Facility Soccer Complex (next to main entrance)

■ Football Athletic Training Facility (on left wall next to double entrance).

■ Heydel Fine Arts Center (left hallway from entrance)

■ Mitchell Student Center (Cafeteria) (on right wall from main entrance)

■ Labry Hall (next to health services RM 127). in

■ Phoenix Plaza in the Weight Room (left of the main entrance)

■ McFarland Hall (on the left wall through the double doors).

■ Alumni Hall (next to the front restrooms).

■ Wrestler Building (on the back left wall from main entrance).

• Non-Life Threatening (Minor):

1. Call Campus Security: (615) 476-3061

2. Provide first aid care to the extent you are able and willing.

■ First aid kits are in the following areas:

• Chemistry laboratories (MR 302 and MR 303)

• Physics laboratory (MH 305)

• Biology laboratories (MH 300 and 304)

• Athletic Training Facilities

 

Transportation Procedures:

1. All Life Threatening (Major) illness/injuries will be transported via ambulance (9-1-1) to the local hospital emergency room.

2. All Non-Life Threatening (Minor) illness/injuries will be victim responsibility for transportation to a medical provider. Campus Security does not provide transportation.

 

Documentation Procedures:

1. Campus Security will complete an incident report that includes pictures, description of incident, care provided on campus, if outside care was needed, etc. for all campus wide emergencies.

 

Post Emergency Communication:

1. All Communications:

a. Vice President for Facilities and Infrastructure will receive all documentation from the Director of Campus Security and determine based on victim where that information is housed.

i. Student Emergency - Documentation is sent to the Dean of Students

ii.Employee Emergency - Documentation is sent to the Human Resource Office.

iii.. Campus Visitor Emergency - Documentation is sent to the Chief Operating Office and/or University Insurance Coordinator.
