2015-2016 Graduate Studies

Secondary Education

The Master of Arts in Teaching - Secondary Education program is designed for individuals interested in becoming candidates for a Tennessee Teaching License and interested in teaching a specific subject area in grades covered by either a 7-12 or 9-12 Tennessee teacher's license. The program mixes online and on-campus course formats and includes a semester of student teaching.

Candidates interested in a Tennessee teachers license covering a 7-12 or 9-12 grade span should first confirm that Cumberland University is approved to recommend their particular type of license by checking the table below.

Candidates must pass the Praxis Content Knowledge Test for their type of licensure before they can be considered candidates for licensure and are permitted to student teach. Candidates should take this test during the first six months in the program. If a candidate cannot pass the Content Knowledge exam, they may elect to defer course taking in this program of study until such time as they pass the Praxis test, or transfer to the Master of Arts in Education program, which will allow them to complete a Master's degree without licensure.

Candidates interested in a Tennessee 7-12 license will complete the following course requirements.

Teacher licensure candidates are responsible for taking and passing the correct licensure examinations at specific times in their program of study as is detailed in the online Teacher Education Handbook.
