2013-2014 Undergraduate Catalog

Transient Permission Policy

Students accepted for enrollment at Cumberland University are expected to complete all subsequent coursework at Cumberland.  However, it is understood that unusual circumstances such as class cancellations, scheduling conflicts, etc. occur making it necessary for students to enroll in a limited number of courses at other institutions in order to maintain reasonable progress toward a timely degree completion. These transient courses must be approved in advance and once completed will be accepted by Cumberland University as credit toward the degree.

Students seeking Transient Permission must:

  1. File an academic appeal with the Cumberland University Registrar, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  2. Attach a detailed letter explaining:
    1. The need for Transient permission
    2. List of specific course(s) to be taken along with the name of the institution where the courses will be taken, and term the courses will be taken.

Restrictions:

  1. General Education Courses (GEC) are offered at Cumberland University at least once a year, and normally every semester.  Therefore, the student is responsible for proper scheduling of GEC courses and Transient Permission will not be considered for any GEC course.
  2. Transient permission will not be granted for any coursework if the student is within the last thirty (30) hours required for graduation.
  3. During May and Summer terms, students residing within a 50 mile radius will not be granted Transient Permission if the desired course is offered by Cumberland University. If Cumberland University is offering the course online the 50 mile radius rule does not apply and the student should plan to take the course with Cumberland
  4. All Cumberland University students will be limited to a maximum of twelve (12) credit hours of non-GEC coursework through Transient Permission.
  5. Elective coursework used for the purpose of athletic or scholarship eligibility that does not apply to a degree program will be considered under special circumstances.
